We have been talking so much lately about the arrival of hummingbirds and orioles to our yards, but what about this stunning fellow – the Rose-breasted Grosbeak? He is certainly one of the most striking birds to show up in our yards each spring!

I took this and many other photos of him when he recently showed up! He has been a constant at my feeders eating sunflower chips from my dinner bell feeders, which are great for keeping the seed dry.

In the wild, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks eat many types of insects, berries, fruits and seeds. At feeders they will eat black oil sunflower seeds as well as safflower seeds and sunflower chips like I am feeding. They will also eat suet, our WBU Bark Butter Bits (suet nuggets), live and roasted mealworms and if you feed orioles, you may find them eating from the oranges and grape jelly you put out!

By the way, female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks look more like large sparrows with a distinct white eyebrow and the same large triangular beak as the males.
